Top 10 Hill Walks

My Top 10 Hill Walks, visiting prominent hills which are too low to be categorised as mountains but which nevertheless command wonderful views

1 Mam Tor

We were lucky to climb Mam Tor with a cloud inversion in the valley - so good that we walked along Great Ridge and came back the same way

2 High Gait Crags

This is as remote as it gets in the Lake District - I had the place to myself as I walked below Scafell Pike, Crinkle Crags and some of lakeland's finest fells

3 Little Orme

A small hill with big views along the North Wales coast and with a good chance of spotting grey seals

4 Muncaster Fell

The weather was quite poor on my walk up Muncaster Fell, but the beauty of the surroundings made up for it

5 Brackenthwaite Hows

This is our 'go to' walk in the Lake District, one which we've done hundreds of times - old woodland, fabulous views and and lakeside stroll. What more could one ask?

6 Merbach Hill

Vast areas of the countryside may be seen from Merbach Hill, including Hergest Ridge, the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons, the Vale of Usk, the Cotswolds and Monmouthshire - and more besides

7 Tom Heights

The climb up to Tom Heights, which has wonderful views of the surrounding fells, can be combined with a circuit of Tarn Hows, one of lakeland's classics. We were lucky to enjoy the walk in perfect autumn weather

8 Black Hambleton

Black Hambleton, the highest of the Hambleton Hills, enjoys a huge panoramic view including the Vales of York and Mowbray

9 Whernside

Whernside is one of the Yorkshire 3 Peaks and this walk also visits the remarkable Ribblehead Viaduct

10 Eildon Hills

Spectacular views from the Eildon Hills in the gently rolling countryside of the Scottish Borders
