Lake District Central Fells

Book 3 – The Lake District Central Fells

Alfred Wainwright’s The Central Fells (Book Three of the Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells) was published in May 1958 and is dedicated to “Those eager explorers of the fells THE DOGS OF LAKELAND willing workers and faithful friends, and an essential part of Lakeland life”

The Lake District Central Fells area covers the high-level terrain between Borrowdale/Derwent Water to the west and the A591 (Keswick-Ambleside road) to the east. It features 27 fells and is often described as a high plateau featuring Langdale Pikes and high-level ridges south of Keswick

The central area of the district my be assumed to contain the highest peaks but, as Wainwright observes, this is not the case here ‘for the watershed is overtopped on all sides by summits of greater elevation, and only at one point, High Raise, is an altitude of 2,500 feet reached’. Size isn’t everything though, and the Central Fells can lay claim to a cluster of fells which is the most attractive in the whole district – the Langdale Pikes
