Alfred Wainwright’s The North Western Fells (Book Six of the Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells) was published in March 1964 and is dedicated to “Those unlovely twins MY RIGHT LEG and MY LEFT LEG, staunch supporters that have carried me about for over half a century, enduring much without complaint and never once let me down”
The Lake District North Western Fells covers 29 summits located between the River Derwent (east/Borrowdale) and River Cocker (west/Lorton Vale)
The area is a good base for anyone ‘ticking off’ the 214 Wainwright fells as they are often linked by ridges so that multiple peaks can be summited in the course of a single walk. As Wainwright says, ‘here is to be found some of the finest ridge-walking in the district, smooth going for the most part, none of it difficult, none of it dangerous with ordinary care, all of it very pleasant and providing views of unsurpassed beauty’. The best example of this, in my opinion, is the ridge between Hopegill Head and Whiteside – one mile in heaven
