Lake District Northern Fells

Book 5 – The Lake District Northern Fells

Alfred Wainwright’s The Northern Fells (Book Five of the Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells) was published in April 1962 and is dedicated to “Those who travel alone THE SOLITARY WANDERERS ON THE FELLS who find contentment in the companionship of the mountains and of the creatures of the mountains”

The Lake District Northern Fells covers the isolated group of hills north of Keswick and the A66, east of Bassenthwaite Lake. This features the major peaks of Skiddaw and Blencathra as well as the rolling unfrequented Uldale and Caldbeck Fells

The fells in this area lack the drama of those in the south but, in Wainwright’s words, ‘they are unspoilt, serene and restful, a perfect sanctuary for birds and animals and fellwalkers who prefer to be away from crowds, even though this means also being away from ice-cream and pop and crisps…’
