Route: Gschwandtkopf from Mösern
Area: Austria, Tyrol
Date of walk: 23rd June 2025
Walkers: Andrew and Gilly
Distance: 6.7 miles
Ascent: 1,000 feet
Weather: Sunny and very warm
As with yesterday’s walks to Wildmoos and Seefeld we started today from the village of Mösern, which is proving to be an excellent base for walking, with numerous routes from the village and a host of others from nearby towns and villages which are easily accessed by public transport
We followed a track out of Mösern which took us past several small farmsteads and into the woods. A wide track took us uphill. The climbing was relentless but was at an easy gradient. Eventually we reached the high point of the walk at just under 5,000 feet. Before visiting the viewpoint of Gschwandtkopf we made a short detour to a nearby reservoir which commands wonderful views of the surrounding mountains. We followed a path around the reservoir before resuming our original path and climbing up to Gschwandtkopf. The views from here were superb
We then set off on the long descent towards Seefeld, following a wide track set at a gentle gradient. This brought us down to Wildsee, a beautiful small lake at the edge of Seefeld. We followed a path along the lakeshore and then walked into Seefeld. Our planned route had been a circular one but we were aware that thunderstorms were forecast so we decided to have refreshments before committing ourselves to the walk back, which would have added another 4-5 miles. As we were sipping our drinks a distant boom of thunder made up our minds. A higher authority was dropping a heavy hint. We sought out the bus stop at the nearby Bahnhof and boarded the 434 bus, which leaves every hour. As we did so, the heavens opened and there was a torrential downpour. Pleased to have avoided a drenching, we arrived back in Mösern to end a very enjoyable morning

A few minutes later, the start of the walk as we pass by the baroque Church of Maria Heimsuchung, Mösern
We make a short detour to an artificial lake which isn't used for drinking water, but instead supplies water for snow production in winter for the benefit of the nearby ski slopes
View from Gschwandtkopf, which is hard to spell and pronounce but its beautiful view is unmistakeable. Our destination, Seefeld, is below
