Thie Drewton Circuit is a walk I’ve done many times and it never fails to please – it provides a perfect example of rolling East Yorkshire Wolds countryside. It’s also a good place to spot birds of prey, including red kite, buzzard and goshawk

I parked as usual on the roadside verge of the estate road leading to Drewton Manor. The landowners kindly permit this as long as care is taken to park considerately. I walked past the manor house and just beyond it turned left and crossed Drewton Beck. There then followed a gradual climb up to the top of Drewton Wold. There were views over miles of open countryside as I made my way above Austin’s Dale

Near the top of Drewton Wold I walked towards the busy B1320. The road can be kept behind a hedge by following a track leading from a gate at the edge of the field. If the route beside the road is taken, it only lasts for a couple of minutes before the start of the return leg above the other side of Austin’s Dale. The weather began to close in at this point and blue skies were replaced by some ominous clouds. These only brought some light rain, a relief in some ways, although the land is parched after weeks of dry weather and desperately needs a soaking. I gradually descended a track into Drewton Dale, eventually reaching the estate road beyond Diamond Cottage. I crossed Drewton Beck again, barely a trickle in this weather. Near Drewton Manor I rejoined the original route and retraced my steps back to the start. For anyone following this walk, a visit to the nearby Drewton’s Farm Shop is highly recommended

Just beyond the manor house I turn left at this junction and will return via the estate road on the right

The A1034 is ahead and the public footpath ends at the verge. It's possible to avoid a very short section beside the road by turning right through the hedge gap and following the line of the hedge
