Earlier in the day, the gloomy weather had caused me to abandon a plan to climb Place Fell. I went for a shorter lower level walk from Patterdale instead. This left me with sufficient time for another visit to nearby Dalemain Gardens

Dalemain Gardens is one of my favourites. We first visited over 20 years ago and have been back many times since. There’s a magical quality about the garden and a feeling that this is a space that is lived in and loved by its owners. There are several public footpaths in the vicinity and a visit to the garden can be combined with a walk – click here for the delightful walk from Dalemain to Dacre which we enjoyed earlier this year

After passing through the entrance (entry is free to members of Historic Houses) I wandered around the various sections of the garden, which was looking as lovely as ever. There’s always something new to see according to the season, and today the roses were the stars of the show. It was another wonderful visit to this special place
