Route: Mösern to Leutasch
Area: Austria, Tyrol
Date of walk: 26th June 2025
Walkers: Andrew and Gilly
Distance: 10.3 miles
Ascent: 1,900 feet
Weather: Sunny and warm, rain near the end
Thunderstorms were forecast to arrive in the early afternoon today, so we abandoned our plan for a high level walk and decided instead to walk from our base in Mösern to Leutasch. If all went to plan we hoped to avoid the rain. After visiting the Peace Bell in Mösern we followed the road and path uphill to idyllic Möserer See. We detoured around the lakeshore path and then headed uphill through the woods, following a route we’d walked earlier in the week when walking to Wildmoos
We branched off to the right to follow a sign for Brunschkopf and after a long but easy climb reached the viewing platform at a height of almost 5,000 feet. There were lovely views over Seefeld, the Wetterstein Mountains, the Hohe Munde and the surrounding mountains. From here we descended to the plateau of Wildmoos. We followed a track to Wildmoossee, one of two ‘aperiodic’ lakes on Wildmoos. These intermittently return regardless of snowmelt and rain. The exact reason for the appearance and disappearance of these lakes is still not fully understood
From here we started the second ascent of the day, following woodland paths and tracks up to Hochmoos, the high area above Wildmoos. The path across Hochmoos was quite vague in places but was waymarked. Along the way there were a couple of viewpoints although the light was rather hazy today. We eventually arrived at the Katzenkopfhütte (Cat’s Head Hut) with the sound of distant thunder booming in the distance. The Katzenkopf cable car wasn’t operating due to the imminent rain, so we decided to have refreshments at the friendly restaurant. As we sat down the heavens opened, depositing torrential rain and large hailstones. We’d been very lucky with our timing. After a while the weather cleared and we descended down the access track into Leutasch, and from there we caught the bus back to Mösern

After a short uphill climb we arrive at Möserer See. We followed the lakeshore path clockwise, which added a little distance to the walk, but it was worth the small effort...
After a descent through the woods we pass by some contented cows at Wildmoosalm and follow the track to the aperiodic lake of Wildmoossee...
The aperiodic lake of Wildmoossee, no sign of its waters and no-one knows when or why they will reappear
Viewpoint at Hochmoos, looking over Seefeld to Seefelder Spitze and Reither Spitze where we'd walked a couple of days ago
An incoming storm, but luckily we arrive at the Katzenkopfhütte (Cat's Head Hut) and take shelter here, enjoying a glass of beer while hailstones and torrential rain pass overhead
