Lynn Canyon Park is at the edge of North Vancouver and has numerous walking trails to suit all levels. Click here for details. We chose a figure of eight loop which would take in some of the park’s highlights. In order to avoid the potential crowds at the main entrance we drove further along the valley where there is roadside parking near the End of the Line General Store (an excellent place for refreshments at the end of the walk). From there we joined a path, part of the Baden-Powell Trail, which descended gradually into the canyon. Wooded staircases assisted the descent at times. An atmospheric path took us through the rare temperate rainforest habitat, home to Douglas fir, western red cedar, western hemlock and sitka spruce. The forest is an important habitat for squirrels, salamanders, raccoons, mice, deer, coyotes and bears. We were carrying bear spray with us, just in case, but it wasn’t needed
Eventually we arrived at the Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge, clearly a tourist attraction in these parts, since there was a queue to get across it. We waited until the crowds were out of the way before crossing the bridge which hangs 150 feet above Lynn Creek. Beyond the bridge we continued our walk along the other side of the canyon. As is always the case, the crowds disappeared within a few yards of the main attraction and we continued through the rainforest in solitude. We passed by the 30 Foot Pool and continued through the woods to Rice Lake. We followed a path clockwise around the lake before completing the loop and retracing our steps back to the start
We really enjoyed this walk, it felt as though we were miles from civilisation yet we were on the edge of the bustling city of Vancouver
