After visits to Queen Elizabeth Park and VanDusen Botanical Garden this morning, we had time for another walk in the afternoon and decided to revisit Granville Island, which we briefly visited last year. The first thing to be said about Granville Island is that it’s not an island, but a peninsula, connected to Vancouver by a narrow neck of land. 50 years ago the area was an industrial wasteland, but over that time has been transformed into a cultural and artistic hub and home to over 300 businesses. Granville Island is now one of Vancouver’s premier attractions
We arrived on the No. 10 bus from VanDusen, but got off to a awkward start as we missed the stop and had to retrace our steps back over Granville Bridge. This turned into a positive as the views over Vancouver from the bridge were superb. At the other end of the bridge we made our way down to Granville Island and followed paths around the edge of False Creek, pausing for refreshments at one of the many small restaurants and bars which line the way. The highlight of the visit was the famous Public Market, an indoor market full of fresh local produce and artisan wares
At the end of a short, but enjoyable walk we hopped on board the Aquabus which took us along False Creek to Olympic Village, giving wonderful views across to Downtown Vancouver along the way. From there we caught the train back to the neighbourhood where we were staying
