Portinscale walk, Newlands Valley

Portinscale

North Western Lake District

Route: Portinscale Circular

Area: North Western Lake District

Date of walk: 15th May 2014

Walkers: Andrew

Distance: 6.2 miles

Weather: sunny and warm

I parked near the Farmers Arms in Portinscale and followed a path out of the village in the direction of Derwent Water. A short section of road took me to Nichol End which gave me good views across the lake

After walking through Fawe Park I joined the Cumbria Way, and at the foot of Cat Bells I crossed over to the other side of Newlands Valley. What a beautiful valley this is!

The return leg was mostly along the banks of Newlands Beck, with views of Skiddaw ahead of me

It was a wonderful low level walk and one that I’d happily repeat. The weather was hot and sunny and by the time I got back to the start I was parched. Was it luck or good planning that I’d parked by the Farmers Arms? Whatever the case, a pint of Jennings went down a treat

Postscript: I’ve been informed (16/10/2020) that the path beside Newlands Beck is presently closed due to erosion – the lane will have to be used instead until and unless the path is re-opened
