Elloughton Wold

Elloughton Wold

Route: Elloughton Wold

Area: East Yorkshire

Date of walk: 10th January 2026

Walkers: Andrew and Gilly

Distance: 4.5 miles

Weather: Sunny, light snow on the ground

It’s been several years since we last followed this route and a return visit was overdue. A light covering of snow and low winter sun promised to show the rolling East Yorkshire Wolds countryside in good light. As on the last occasion here, we parked in Welton, a picturesque place, with all the ingredients of a proper village – a pond, a church and a pub (The Green Dragon, a good place to end the walk).

We walked past St Helen’s Church, set in an idyllic position and bordered by the village pond. We left the village at Welton Mill and joined the long distance Yorkshire Wolds Way, which we completed over 10 years ago. The path took us along the bottom of Welton Dale, ascending gently all the while, until we reached Welton Top. At this point it’s possible to take a shorter way back by turning right at the junction and returning via Welton Wold. We decided to turn left instead and take the longer route back via Elloughton Dale. After passing by the mausoleum there was a short but quiet road section which we left at a bend in the road to join the High Hunsley Circuit

Just before Elloughton Dale we left the High Hunsley Circuit and forked off to the left, descending gently down Elloughton Wold, enjoying huge views over the River Humber and across to Lincolnshire. At the bottom of the Elloughton Wold we arrived at the road leading back into Welton, which afforded more good views over the Humber on our right as we went along. The road brought us back into Welton to end a lovely walk on the Wolds
