Sorry to hear that your Place Fell walk was dramatic for the wrong reasons. The recent heat we've had has been energy zapping to say the least, so it's easy to see how being out in such conditions can see you drained and tired. I recall a walk on Hard Knott, Harter Fell and Green Fell in very warm conditions that saw my walking pal telling me his thumbs had gone weird, and that he was swimming with tadpoles! A sure sign the heat exhaustion had kicked in. And, the day I undertook the Ennerdale Horseshoe (peaks aplenty!) was foolishly in some of the hottest weather Europe had ever seen. I thought I'd packed plenty of water ... but that turned out to be wrong! Blimey. I had to throw my new socks I'd worn that day away as they'd never recover from such hard treatment, but the full underwater lie down in the stream at the end of the walk was the perfect conclusion to a roasty-toasty day to remember.
