Lake District Western Fells

Book 7 – The Lake District Western Fells

Alfred Wainwright’s The Western Fells (Book Seven of the Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells) was published in April 1966 and is dedicated to “ALL WHO HAVE HELPED ME”

The Lake District Western Fells covers the dramatic mountain area west of Buttermere and Ennerdale. The area is bounded by Wastwater to the south and Loweswater to the northIt includes 33 peaks, describing rugged fells such as Great Gable, Pillar, Steeple, Yewbarrow, Red Pike, and Haystacks (Wainwright’s favourite of all the fells, and mine too)

Wainwright’s ashes were scattered at Innominate Tarn below Haystacks and there is a poignant memorial plaque in St James’ Church Buttermere which looks up to the fell and is inscribed ‘Pause and remember Alfred Wainwright – Fellwalker, guide book author and illustrator who loved this valley – lift your eyes to Haystacks his favourite place – 1907-1991’
