Book 1 – The Lake District Eastern Fells
Alfred Wainwright’s The Eastern Fells (Book One of the Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells) was first published in May 1955 and is dedicated to “THE MEN OF THE ORDNANCE SURVEY whose maps of Lakeland have given me much pleasure both on the fells and by my fireside”
The introduction to the first of the Guides ends with the words “This book is one man’s way of expressing his devotion to Lakeland’s friendly hills. It was conceived, and is born, after many years of inarticulate worshipping at their shrines. It is, in very truth, a love-letter”
The Lake District Eastern Fells area covers the mountain massif running north from Ambleside to the A66 near Keswick, focusing on the Helvellyn and Fairfield ranges. It comprises the greatest single mass of high ground in the district. The area includes 35 peaks known for steep eastern slopes, such as Helvellyn, Fairfield, St Sunday Crag, and Clough Head, primarily bounded by Ullswater to the east and Thirlmere to the west
