Weather: Cloudy at first but then sun and blue skies
Our son James gave us a lift to the starting point at Mirador de ses Barques, a viewpoint from which there are spectacular views over the Sóller valley to the sea – a great start to the walk (anyone not having the luxury of a spare driver and a rented car can take the bus 354 from Sóller to the Mirador)
This was a walk of two distinct parts, the first part being through ancient olive groves with the Tramuntana mountains towering above us, followed by an amazing coastal walk along to our destination, Cala Tuent, a quiet cove. The views from the coastal path were superlative
Although the walk ended at Cala Tuent, the pleasure continued with an excellent lunch at the local restaurant, a snooze on the beach, a boat trip back along the coast to Port de Sóller and finally a ride on the old tram back to our base in Sóller
It had been one of the best walks of our lives

View from the Mirador de ses Barques - spectacular, but even better was to come during the course of the walk
Zooming in on Port de Sóller
A cobbled path leads away from the viewpoint
The Port de Sóller watchtower
The early part of the inland section through groves of olive trees
These ancient trees - some are reputed to be 1,000 years old - were a major feature of this walk
Walking along along the Balitx Valley…
Looking up to the Tramuntana mountains
Near Balitx d’Avall
A glimpse of the sea and a hint of things to come
Looking towards the Tramuntana mountains
We start to head towards the coast
Coll de Biniamar
The start of the spectacular coastal section of the walk
Looking down to Punta de Cala Roja
Our destination is the bay between the two promontories ahead
Looking back to Punta de Cala Roja again
Further along this heavenly path
There are frequent pauses to take in the views
It’s a narrow path but it holds no terrors for anyone with a fear of heights
Another view back to back to Punta de Cala Roja
Cala Tuent is just beyond the rocky outcrop ahead
Zooming in on the outcrop
A last view back along the path as we turn inland for a short distance
We walk in the direction of the Tramuntana mountains
Turning the corner to head down into the bay
Cala Tuent below
Time for lunch at the excellent restaurant overlooking the bay
View of the beach from the restaurant - the road is inaccessible to coaches, so the bay is relatively quiet
We descend to the beach for a well earned snooze
The end of the walk but not the end of the journey, as we caught the taxi boat back to Port de Soller (having checked the website for availability)
Leaving Cala de Tuent on the boat
Some photos of the wonderful trip back along the coast…
The captain takes the boat into a cave!
The watchtower of Port de Sóller (‘Torre Picada’)
Looking up to the watchtower
We suffer a mild bout of property envy
The new Sa Creu lighthouse…
…and the old Sa Creu lighthouse
We disembark from our boat after a wonderful trip
Port de Sóller harbour
One last treat - the old tram back to Sóller from the port. What an amazing day it had been
