When I opened the curtains and looked across Lorton Vale, the conditions promised a cloud inversion – there was mist along the valley, but some clear sky to be seen above it

So without ado I was off along the lane and up the outgang near Miller Place. This connects with a path running along the foot of Dodd. It’s necessary to walk round to the back of Dodd – a full frontal assault is possible, but it’s very steep

I was on the top after about half an hour and the views were fantastic. The promised inversion was there, with low cloud clinging to Lorton Vale and beyond

After taking in the view for a while, I descended to Hope Beck and joined the gated road which leads down to the the hamlet of Hopebeck. It was then a short walk back along the lane to Millbeck – and breakfast
