Leighton Moss is the largest reedbed in north west England and home to some special birds. BBC has chosen the reserve as its base for the 2014 series of Autumnwatch, starting in a few days time
I arrived early and visited the various hides along the waymarked paths. It was a great thrill to see some rare bearded tits, one of the star species of the reserve and now on the Amber List. I managed to grab a few photos, not particularly good ones, and then spent a couple of fruitless hours trying to get better shots but without success. On the way out I walked past another rare creature – Chris Packham
I could have spent all day there, but had planned another walk in the area (see my Arnside Knott walk) so reluctantly had to take my leave
