Whitby Abbey

Whitby

North Yorkshire

Route: Robin Hood’s Bay to Whitby

Area: North Yorkshire

Date of walk: 24th July 2016

Walkers: Andrew Gilly and Tom

Distance: 8.7 miles

Ascent: 900 feet

Weather: Sunny at start then clouded over with light rain at end. Very warm

We parked in one of the public car parks in Robin Hood’s Bay and joined the Cleveland Way, a long distance footpath along the north east coast. This would be our companion until journey’s end in Whitby

Navigation is a simple affair and a map is hardly necessary – just keep the sea on your right as you follow the coastal path with its innumerable ups and downs. The erosion of the cliffs has caused the path to be diverted in one of two places but the waymarking is good throughout

We enjoyed some wonderful views along the cliff tops as we followed the coastal path

Eventually Whitby Abbey came into view in the distance – the initial view being spoilt by an intervening caravan park. We decided to visit the Abbey and after wandering around the atmospheric ruins we walked through the town. It was raining by now so we didn’t linger and caught the Arriva bus back to Robin Hood’s Bay

This is a superb walk and highly recommended
