Holme Wood and Loweswater

Holme Wood

Western Lake District

Route: Holme Wood and Loweswater

Area: Western Lake District

Date of walk: 6th May 2016

Walkers: Andrew and Gilly

Distance: 3.3 miles

Ascent: 500 feet

Weather: weak sun, white sky, warm

We only had time for a short walk today, so decided to revisit nearby Loweswater. The lake is unique as it’s the only lake which flows towards the Lake District fells, and its waters run into nearby Crummock Water, with which it was once joined

We parked at Maggie’s Bridge and walked along the track towards High Nook Farm. Just before the farm we left the track to join a permitted path across the fields to Watergate Farm at the head of Loweswater

Rather than following the path along the shore we climbed up through Holme Wood in order to visit Holme Force. The waterfall was in good form and after taking a few snaps we descended through the wood to the main track near the lakeshore

We’d hoped that the Holme Wood bluebells would be in flower, and though a few of them were it was clear we hadn’t got our timing quite right – in another couple of weeks they should be at their peak

We followed the track out of Holme Wood, across the head of the lake, and back to the start. A short walk but a very sweet one
