The wild daffodils which grow along the banks of the River Dove in Farndale are a spectacular sight, though we wondered if we’d left it too late today. On the previous occasions we’ve visited they’ve been at their peak in early April, but we weren’t unduly concerned as Farndale is a superb walking area with or without its daffodils

We parked in the small village of Church Houses and followed the path towards High Mill. We could see at once that the daffodils were still in bloom and that a few days remain to enjoy this spectacular sight. A wonderful section of the walk then followed along the bank of the River Dove as far as Low Mill, which is usually full of tourists at this time of the year. Thanks to our early start there was no-one else around

We walked out of Low Mill along a quiet lane, gradually gaining height, and enjoying some superb views from the west side of the valley to the east before descending to cross the River Dove and climb up to the other side of the valley

A succession of paths and a short but quiet road section took us back to the start, where tradition dictated that we paid a visit to the Daffy Caffy for a bacon butty and a cup of tea – a great way to end a great walk
