Whitby

Whitby

North Yorkshire

Route: Robin Hood’s Bay to Whitby

Area: North Yorkshire

Date of walk: 9th October 2014

Walkers: Andrew and Gilly

Ascent: 1,100 feet

Distance: 9.8 miles (including 2-3 miles wandering around both)

Weather: Sunny at start but clouded over with some light showers and a few brighter spells

We parked in the car park at the top of Robin Hood’s Bay and walked down the hill into the village. It’s a fascinating little place, well worth exploring, and after wandering around the narrow streets for a while we walked back up the hill to start the walk along the coast to Whitby

We soon picked up the Cleveland Way and having done so navigation was a simple affair – just follow the cliff top for the next few miles. It would be impossible to get lost on this walk. There were quite a few ups and downs as we made our way along the eroding cliffs, until eventually Whitby Abbey came into view

We visited the Abbey, then walked down the 199 steps into the town itself. As with Robin Hood’s Bay, it’s a fascinating place to explore with all sorts of diversions to cater for every taste. We walked along the narrow streets for a while, then caught the bus back to Robin Hood’s Bay

It was a wonderful walk with ever changing sea views
