Thorp Perrow Arboretum boasts one of the best collections of specimen trees and shrubs in the country and is somewhere I’ve never visited before, despite having passed close by hundreds of times on my way up the A1. It was time to remedy this long standing omission

On arrival I was given a map of the gardens, but quickly decided that this is a place to wander around rather than follow a route. There are numerous tempting paths, and it’s best to go where your fancy takes you. The map is useful though, as it’s easy to lose your bearings

At this time of year, the great glory of the gardens is the stunning autumn foliage, which today gave a wonderful display, despite the fact that the weather was as dull as ditchwater – it could hardly be any gloomier

I spent a couple of hours walking around the 100 acres of grounds and every step was a delight
