Low Fell

Low Fell

Western Lake District

Route: Darling Fell and Low Fell

Area: Western Lake District

Date of walk: 20th November 2015

Walkers: Andrew

Distance: 6.4 miles

Ascent: 1,800 feet

Weather: Mostly overcast, several showers a few short brighter spells

I’ve been up Low Fell numerous times – it’s one of my favourite fells – but have always made the same approach, the obvious one starting from Thackthwaite. Today I decided to break this habit and make the ascent via Darling Fell

I parked near the old Mosser Road, which is unfit for cars, and walked up the ruined track for a while before leaving it to climb up the slopes of Darling Fell. As I gained height the weather deteriorated and by the time I reached the summit it was blowing a gale and there was a considerable wind chill factor

Without ado I made the steep down and up to the summit of Low Fell. The usually sublime view from the top wasn’t at its best today thanks to the general gloom and it was a struggle to keep the camera steady as I was buffeted by the strong winds

I descended to Thackthwaite and returned to the start along the Thackthwaite lane and then the road along Loweswater. A poor weather day but the scenery was wonderful nonetheless
