Hallin Fell

Hallin Fell

Far Eastern Lake District

Route: Hallin Fell

Area: Far Eastern Lake District

Date of walk: 19th November 2015

Walkers: Andrew and Gilly

Distance: 3.2 miles

Ascent: 1,100 feet

Weather: Mostly cloudy, bright spells near the end, some light rain

We parked opposite St Peter’s Church on Martindale Hause, which gave us a good leg up today’s objective, Hallin Fell. The climb up the grassy slopes started immediately and it was very easy going – we were at the top within 20 minutes

We sheltered from the rain and driving wind for a while behind the massive summit cairn, a monument which can be seen for miles around. We then descended to the shore of Ullswater down a steepish path not shown on the OS map, which brought us to the wonderful shoreline path which runs to the head of the lake

After walking along the shore for 20 minutes or so we turned inland just before Sandwick Bay and joined the elevated path along Hallin bank. This was a heavenly section which coincided with an improvement in the weather and we enjoyed some glorious views along the valleys of Boredale and Howe Grain

All too soon we arrived back at our original ascent path and retraced our steps from here back to the start. It was only a short walk, but was so full of variety and interest that it felt like a much longer one
