The Bridestones

The Bridestones

North York Moors

Route: The Bridestones

Area: North York Moors

Date of walk: 2nd May 2015

Walkers: Andrew and Gilly

Distance: 5.8 miles

Weather: Mostly overcast with some brighter spells

We parked at Staindale car park in Dalby Forest. If you don’t have a pass there’s a fee of £7 which sounds quite steep but the forest is huge and there are numerous activities on offer, including miles of tracks and trails, so that’s not an issue

We were here to walk and set off along the track up High Staindale beside Grain Slack, leading into Dargate Slack. The higher we climbed, the narrower the valley became until we eventually emerged at the viewpoint on Crosscliff Brow. There were tremendous views across the moors from here

We followed a wide track along the brow before reaching the half way point, where we left the forest and entered open moorland – a complete contrast. We left the main track across the moor to visit the unique and peculiar rock formations known as The Bridestones. After wandering around the stones for a while we re-entered Dalby Forest to descend an easy track back to the start, passing by Staindale Lake as we did so
