Crummock Water

Crummock Water

Route: Crummock Water

Area: Western Lake District

Date of walk: 15th March 2018

Walkers: Andrew and Gilly

Distance: 2.5 miles

Ascent: 350 feet

Weather: Cloudy with some light rain

It rained quite heavily during the morning and by the time it stopped there was only time for a short walk, so short that I might not have recorded it on these pages were it not for the fact that I passed a milestone, somewhere near the foot of Crummock Water, in clocking up 5,000 miles since starting this site in 2013

The route which we took was made up ‘on the hoof’ as we went along. We parked at Lanthwaite Green and followed the path which runs to the right of Lanthwaite Green Farm. It was good to see some new born lambs in the fields as we headed towards Lanthwaite Wood. On entering the wood we followed a track which descends gently towards the River Cocker, then turned sharp left to walk to the foot of Crummock Water. The normally lovely view from here was mostly obscured by cloud and mist

We then followed the lakeshore path past the boathouse and then through High Wood, where the trees are so thickly planted there’s hardly any light. On emerging from the wood we turned left uphill along a path we’ve not walked before. This brought us up to the Buttermere Road and from here we walked along the roadside back to the start of a very pleasant amble
